The women’s soccer team (1-4-0) earned its first program victory Sunday, defeating IUPUI (1-2-1), 2-0, at Flames Field.

The Flames notched their first win in the fifth game of the inaugural season after falling to Morehead State, 3-1, Friday at Flames Field.

UIC returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday at Northern Iowa.

“I am very proud of our team,” head coach Brian Rigby said. “We came back after a tough loss on Friday and played with passion and intelligence. Our ladies should be proud of themselves for what they have accomplished so far. This is a group that has strong character and the talent to play at an elite level.”

Junior Flo Beshiri and sophomore Jasmin Carrera recorded goals in Sunday’s win. Beshiri headed in the game-winner and her first goal of the season at the 10:25 mark of the first half. She was assisted by freshman Christina Hovatter, who sent a corner kick into the box for the Beshiri score.

Carrera added the insurance goal in the 73rd minute as she dribbled the ball from midfield and laced a shot into the top-left corner of the net. She collected her third goal of the season to lead the team with six points.

Goalkeeper Kelly Fritz garnered her first career shutout as she totaled five saves on the afternoon. Fritz now has 23 saves on the season.

The Flames attempted a season-high 15 shots against the Jaguars, including nine on goal.
