Website provides updates on faculty collective bargaining

The university has created a website, facultycollectivebargaining.uic.edu, to inform students, faculty and staff of the status of negotiations and answer questions relating to a possible strike announced Feb. 6 by the union representing two faculty collective bargaining units on campus.

The union representing full-time faculty at UIC in colleges other than Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy announced plans for a two-day work stoppage Feb. 18 and 19.

UIC United Faculty, which represents tenured and nontenure-track faculty in separate collective bargaining units, filed a 10-day notice of intent to strike with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. The filing allows, but does not require, faculty in the bargaining units to strike any time after 10 days.

The decision whether to strike is up to each individual faculty member.

Negotiations between the university and the union began in August 2012 and moved to federal mediation last November. Further meetings with the federal mediator are scheduled for Feb. 14 and 21.
