Re: Policies and Procedures Regarding Inclement Weather
The purpose of this communication is to remind UIC employees and supervisors about policies and procedures regarding inclement weather.
Periods of inclement weather often result in conditions that make travel difficult and possibly hazardous. Extreme weather conditions overnight and this morning caused potentially dangerous travel conditions in the Chicago area. Because UIC is committed to the safety and well-being of its employees, the University delayed the start of normal operations until 10:00am on Friday, February 9, 2018 due to the extreme weather. The delayed start allowed for roads to be cleared, the campus to begin snow removal efforts, and provided flexibility for faculty, staff and students to safely travel to campus.
If a non-exempt employee chose to delay their start time, they may be required to use personal time or request to take an excused, unpaid absence for hours not worked. Both exempt and non-exempt employees who do not report to work on February 9, 2018 must use personal time or take an excused, unpaid absence.
Please see the table below for specific leave reporting requirements according to each employment group.
Employment Group | Leave Benefit Options |
FLSA Non-Exempt Employees: Civil Service and Hourly | For any hours absent during normally scheduled work hours, benefit time or unpaid leave must be used:
|
FLSA Exempt Employees: Civil Service, Academic Professional, and Faculty | If an employee reports to work by 10am due to the delayed start, no leave time should be reported.
If absent a full-day based on work schedule, benefit time must be used in a full day increment:
