Appointments

Sharon Parmet, former media relations professional for the University of Chicago Hospitals, Illinois Institute of Technology and the American Medical Association, was named associate director in the News Bureau of the Office of Public Affairs.

Parmet will handle media relations for College of Medicine and the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System.

She holds a master’s degree in science journalism from Boston University and undergraduate degrees in English and biology from Skidmore College.

Alan Malter, associate professor of marketing, was appointed to the editorial review board of the Journal of International Marketing, published by the American Marketing Association.

Awards

Kevin Kumashiro, professor of Asian American studies, received the American Education Research Association’s Division K Mid-Career Award at the group’s annual meeting April 28 in San Francisco.

The award recognizes research and scholarship on important issues in teaching and teacher education.

Lisa Lee, associate director of the School of Art and Design, received a Breaking Barriers Award from the Chicago Foundation for Women’s Asian American Leadership Council May 7.

The award honors women who have been among the first in their disciplines to achieve a level of leadership that has paved the way for others.

Honors

Amy Au, a resident in restorative dentistry, was awarded an International Association for Dental Research Prosthodontics Group Student Research Fellowship. The fellowship will help Au purchase supplies for her research on the

antimicrobial effect of titania nanotube surfaces embedded with silver.

Jerry Bona, professor of math, statistics and computer science, was named a 2013 fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Members were selected for exemplary research and service that advance the fields of applied mathematics and computational science.

College of Dentistry student Marc Manos is one of 16 students nationwide awarded a research fellowship from the American Association for Dental Research.

Manos and his mentor, Christopher Engeland, assistant professor of periodontics, are working on research that compares differences in healing rates and inflammatory responses between healthy individuals and those with periodontitis.

Cortino Sukotjo, assistant professor of restorative dentistry, received an American Dental Education Association/William J. Gies Foundation Education Fellowship.

The fellowship includes a $10,000 stipend to cover expenses for a three-month experience in Washington, D.C., working with staff in the association’s Center for Educational Policy and Research.

Presentations

Evan McKenzie, associate professor of political science, testified as an expert witness before the judicial proceedings committee of the Maryland State Senate in March.

McKenzie, an expert on homeowner associations, addressed a proposed bill that would empower judges to oversee awards of fees to attorneys representing homeowner and condominium associations when they are the prevailing party in cases they bring against unit owners.

Scholarships

Eleven students in Liberal Arts and Sciences were awarded an Olive and Alfred Kuehn Scholarship for the past academic year.
