Urban Forum
The 2016 UIC Urban Forum will examine jobs and the labor force of tomorrow.
This year’s forum will focus on human capital development to address the contemporary challenges that shape human capital in metropolitan regions. Presentations will examine the role of migration and immigration, K-12 education preparedness, post-secondary workforce training and development efforts, and recruitment and professional development of Millennials.
The event takes place from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 15 at the UIC Forum.
Admission is free for all Chicago-area teachers, faculty and students but registration is required. Please bring a school ID for free admission. Tickets are $25 for the general public, which includes lunch.
Global health benefit
The UIC Center for Global Health hosts its 4th annual Benefit, “Working for the World,” Sept. 29.
The event takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, 2320 W. Chicago Ave.
The museum will be open for viewing, and the event also includes a cocktail reception and silent auction.
Individual tickets are $125.
A portion of each purchase is a tax-deductible donation that will support global health education and international service projects sponsored by the UIC Center for Global Health.
Research opportunity
The African American Cultural Center is recruiting undergraduate students interested in African-American history and culture to participate in a paid research opportunity.
Student researchers will identify, access and log archival materials and develop a finding aid for the official African-American Cultural Center archive that is being established in the Daley Library Special Collections.

Be a service leader
Applications will be accepted through Friday for service leader positions with Student Leadership Development & Volunteer Services.
Service leaders take on responsibilities for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day and the 8th Annual UIC Day of Service. Leaders will also assist with Speaking of Service (S.O.S.) and Get Involved in Volunteer Experiences (G.I.V.E.).
Grants available
Pre-proposals are now being accepted for the fall 2016 UIC Chancellor’s Innovation Fund Proof of Concept Awards Program for project grants of up to $185,000.
To be eligible for funding, projects must be based on a UIC invention that has been disclosed to the Office of Technology Management.
Applications are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 30.
The awards are sponsored by the UIC Chancellor’s Innovation Fund, IllinoisVENTURES and the Office of Technology Management.

Green ideas
The Sustainability Fee Advisory Board is seeking student proposals for ways to make the campus greener.
Each student pays a $3 Sustainability Fee per semester, which funds projects that establish a sustainable campus environment. The fee funds small, short-term projects, subsidizes long-term projects and helps fund student travel to sustainability-related conferences.
All UIC students and student organizations are eligible to apply. Submit a letter of inquiry by Sept. 19.
TeachTech Conference
Share ideas for shaping learning with technology in teaching as a presenter for the 2016 TechTeach Conference.
Proposals are due Sept. 16.
Presenters can discuss topics such as using digital content, collaborating inside and outside the classroom, using engagement strategies and more.
The Nov. 15 conference will bring together faculty, staff and IT professionals who will demonstrate innovative techniques and tools along with the most effective use of technology in teaching and learning.
Registration will open in the fall.
