Campus News: Pop-Up Pantry today

POP-UP PANTRY TODAY

The Pop-Up Pantry, a new service that offers free canned goods and non-perishable items to UIC students in need, will be open today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 604A Student Center East. Students should bring their i-card.

The Pop-Up Pantry is sponsored by the Wellness Center and Undergraduate Student Government with the Greek Programming Board. More than 2,000 items were donated to the pantry Nov. 19 and 20, and the pantry served more than 100 students on its first day Nov. 21.

The next Pop-Up Pantry dates will be announced in January.

WORLD AIDS DAY

Project HEAL, in the department of emergency medicine, sponsors events today and Thursday to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.

SOUNDS OF THE HOLIDAYS

Four UIC music ensembles will get together Friday to present a holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. at the UIC Forum. Hear the University Choir, String Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and University Band perform the sounds of the season. Admission is $10 general admission and $5 students, or pay as you can.

BEARDSTOWN, U.S.A.

Visit the town of Beardstown, Illinois, population 6,000, through the lens of the documentary film “Between the Bottomlands and the World,” shown Thursday, 7 p.m., in Gallery 400. The film by Ryan Griffis and Sarah Ross uses video essay and actor-interpreted interviews with long-time residents, recent immigrants and activists. A discussion with the artists and Salome Skvirsky, assistant professor of Latin American and Latino studies, follows.

 

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN AMERICA

Join the College of Engineering for a question-and-answer session on “The State of Science and Technology in America,” with Alan Schriesheim, director emeritus of Argonne National Laboratory, 3:30 p.m. Dec. 8, 1043 Engineering Research Facility. Schriesheim is president of the Chicago Council on Science and Technology. Former director of Exxon Corporate Research, he holds 22 patents.

Through Miracle on Taylor Street, sponsored by UI Hospital since 1995, UIC employees can help families in the surrounding community at the holidays.

Employees or campus units can buy gifts for families sponsored by A Safe Haven, the UIC Child and Family Development Center, Chinese American Service League, Missionaries of Charity, Mujeres Latinas en Acción and Neopolitan Lighthouse.

Recommended gifts include educational toys, books, board games, school supplies, hats, gloves and gift cards, with a total price range of $25 to $30 for each family member. LATE NIGHT AT THE LIBRARY

The Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago and the Daley Library will have extended hours through finals.

The Daley Library and IDEA Commons will be open around-the-clock from 10 a.m. Sunday until 7 p.m. Dec. 12. A current i-card is required to enter between 9 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. From Dec. 7 through Dec. 18, the health sciences library will be open Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to midnight; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to midnight.

All study areas, books and journals, computers and printers, circulation and reserve services, group study rooms, SMART rooms and laptop check-out (at the health sciences library) will be available. Information about hours for the health sciences libraries in Peoria, Rockford and Urbana is online.

 

FINALISTS FOR POLICE CHIEF

A finalist for the UIC chief of police will speak in an open forum today in the Illinois Rooms, Student Center East:

UNDERGRADS CAN WIN $5,000

Deadline is Jan. 30 for UIC undergraduates to enter the annual Maurice Prize Competition sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Students should undertake a project of their choice that addresses an issue, showing knowledge, creative use of resources and the ability to work with others to find solutions. The winner — an individual or team — receives $5,000. Information sessions about the competition will be held Jan. 16, 1 to 2 p.m., and Jan. 20, 3 to 4 p.m., both in 226 Student Recreation Facility.

 

INTERNATIONAL L

The Urban Transportation Center will discuss the ways international students learn about getting around Chicago, and the knowledge they bring home, at Thursday’s presentation, “Urban Transportation and the International Student.” The presentation, noon to 1 p.m. in the Great Cities Institute Conference Room at CUPPA Hall, will feature James Hammerschmidt and Radomir “Ray” Mitic of the UIC Office of International Services.
