Nurses take the plunge

UIC College of Nursing students follow an annual tradition May 4 by jumping into the UIC Sport and Fitness Center pool.

Run for lung cancer

The University of Illinois Cancer Center, in partnership with A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation, presents the Chicago Lung 5K Run/Walk May 21 to promote lung cancer awareness.

Proceeds support lung cancer research programs of the center and the foundation.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at the lakefront, at Oakwood and Lake Shore Drive.

Registration is online or at the event. The cost to walk or run is $35 for adults and children 13 and over, $15 for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 5 are free. T-shirts are included.

 

Outstanding innovation

Nominations are due May 26 for the 2015 Innovator and Inventor of the Year Awards.

The awards recognize an outstanding faculty member who has engaged with the Office of Technology Management in the technology transfer process. Winners are recognized for their innovative spirit and inventions’ potential impact and value to their respective field and to society.

Honorees will receive $3,500 during a ceremony at 5 p.m. June 21 in the East Terrace, Student Center East.

 

Civic engagement awards

Applications are due June 13 for Civic Engagement Research Fund Awards.

The Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement sponsors the $20,000 awards for projects focused on civic engagement. Faculty members and research staff of UIC research centers, institutes, and programs are eligible to apply. Awards are set at a maximum of $20,000 each.

 

Sustainability institute

The sixth annual UIC Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy is now accepting applications for the highly competitive two-week workshop and lecture series.

Senior-level undergraduates, graduate students and professionals working in the fields of sustainability and energy can apply through July 1.

The institute, which runs from August 4 to 16, includes daily presentations on energy and sustainability-related topics, collaborative projects, mentoring activities, site visits and networking opportunities.

The theme of this year’s program, “Nexus,” will focus on the connection between water and energy.

 

Pyro Paddlers

UIC’s dragon boat team, the Pyro Paddlers, is looking for paddlers to race with the team in summer races.

The Pyro Paddlers is made up of UIC students, alumni, staff and faculty. Paddling experience is not required.

The team is supported by the Asian American Resource and Cultural
Center, the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Asian Americans, and the Office of Public and Governmental Affairs.

Expectant mothers 

UIC Parking Services has developed a new program that provides convenient parking for expectant mothers.

UIC students and employees who are in the third trimester of pregnancy and already have a parking permit from Parking Services can request a transfer to a closer, more convenient lot.
