Sharing stories
Three professional storytellers will share stories about their traditions as Catholic, Jewish and Muslim Americans Oct. 25 for the Chancellor’s Lecture and Event Series.

Susan O’Halloran, Arif Choudhury and Syd Lieberman will speak at “More Alike Than Not: Stories from Three Americans — Catholic, Jewish and Muslim,” 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the UIC Forum.

A light reception with kosher food options follows.

The program will be followed by a 3 p.m. “Ask Big Questions” storytelling workshop at the Honors College, co-sponsored by the UIC Jewish Muslim Initiative and the Hillel Ask Big Questions Initiative.

Vote on tenure committee
Tenured and tenure-track faculty can vote through Oct. 25 for eight faculty members to serve on the Promotion and Tenure Committee.

New location for payroll, benefit offices
Beginning Friday, the Payroll Customer Service office and the Benefits Office will have new temporary locations on the fourth floor of the Marshfield Building due to remodeling.

The payroll office will move upstairs from 106 Marshfield Building. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., phone 312-996-7200.

The Benefits Office will move to the fourth floor of the Marshfield Building from its current location in the Human Resource Building. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., phone 312-996-6471.

The remodeling should be completed by summer 2013.

 

Future of corruption
The “Future of Chicago” lecture scheduled for today has been moved to Friday.

Scientific symposium
The College of Pharmacy will host a symposium Saturday on how botanical dietary supplements can benefit women’s health.

The eighth annual event, sponsored by the Natural Health Research Institute and the American Nutrition Association, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the College of Pharmacy.

The scientific symposium will examine the safety and efficacy of dietary supplements and botanicals in women’s health care and the cost-effectiveness of natural products. A panel discussion will follow the presentations.

Continuing education credits are available for pharmacists, nutritionists and nurses.

Registration is $15 for students, $55 for pharmacists and $30 for others.

Historic Havana
Cuban architect and urbanist Julio Cesar Perez Hernandez explores ways to preserve Havana’s spirit and architectural legacy at an event today.

His talk, “The Magic and Poetry of Havana: A Glance at the Past, Present and Future of a Caribbean Metropolis,” begins at 12:15 p.m. in 400 College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs Hall.

Hernandez, a former Loeb Fellow at Harvard University, is a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame.

The lecture is sponsored by the Latin American and Latino studies program, Great Cities Institute and the Latino Cultural Center.

Recognizing employees
Celebrate award-winning employees Nov. 1 at the Employee Recognition Awards Program.

The event honors the 2012 recipients of the Award of Merit, CAPE Award, WOW, INSPIRE and Luminary Awards. Employees with 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service will also be recognized.

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and a formal reception follows at the UIC Forum.

Breast cancer awareness
UIC hosts two upcoming events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Kent Hoskins, assistant professor of medicine, will discuss “Identifying Women at Increased Risk for Breast Cancer” at noon Thursday in 1135 Hospital. Lunch will be provided.

The radiology department offers walk-in mammography screenings for UIC employees throughout October.

Screenings are held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Outpatient Care Center, Suite 2C.

Cooking up a storm
Teams of student chefs will compete today in the fifth annual “You’re the Chef” event.

The competition, sponsored by dining services, begins at 4:30 p.m. in the East Café in Student Center East.

The winning team’s menu will be featured at All-You-Care-To-Eat dining areas Nov. 15.

 

Time to renew license?
The mobile Illinois Secretary of State office will be on campus today from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Center East concourse.

Students and employees can renew driver’s license or state ID, buy vehicle license plate stickers, register to be an organ or tissue donor, and buy specialty UIC license plates to support student scholarships.

 

Hearing screenings
The audiology department will conduct free hearing screenings for employees and their family members Thursday.

The screenings take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Four Tops will headline the 12th annual S.E.E. Benefit Nov. 30.

Researcher of the Year
Nominations are due Oct. 25 for 2012 Researcher of the Year, awarded to five faculty members chosen from the research categories of basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities.

The award includes a $5,000 prize.

The 2011 winners were Gail Prins, professor of urology; Cecilia Gerber, professor of physics; and Susan Hughes, professor of community health sciences.

Fun with pets
Furnetic/Chicago Center for Veterinary Medicine, a clinic of the U of I College of Veterinary Medicine, will host its annual Fall Frolic Oct. 27.

Safe Zone training
The Gender and Sexuality Center presents Safe Zone training workshops to heighten awareness of LGBTQ issues.

Programs include information on sexual and gender identity issues, policies that affect LGBTQ individuals and strategies for creating inclusive environments.

Free flu shots
Free seasonal flu shots for employees and retirees will be offered Friday.

College of Pharmacy students will give the vaccinations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Cardinal Room, Student Center East.

Employees and retirees enrolled in the Quality Care Health Plan or a state-sponsored managed care plan can receive the free flu shots by showing their health insurance card and driver’s license or state ID.

The event is sponsored by the College of Pharmacy, University Payroll and Benefits and the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services.

Events on campus for Hispanic Heritage Month include:

• “Maya Apocalypse 2012 — Myth or Reality?” interactive panel discussion, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday

• “We Overcame Torture,” conversation with Italia Mendez of the Campaign against Political Repression and Sexual Torture, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 24.

Both events are held in the Latino Cultural Center, Lecture Center B2.

• “Lemon,” PBS VOCES documentary on spoken word artist Lemon Andersen, Oct. 30. Reception 5 p.m. before the 5:30 p.m. screening, Cardinal Room, Student Center East. A 30-minute discussion follows.

The screening is hosted by the UIC Office of Community Affairs and WTTW-TV.

 

Learn about research
The Survey Research Laboratory offers introductory seminars on survey research methodology this semester.

Topics include survey sampling, Thursday; and focus groups, Oct. 25.

All seminars will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in 136 College of Nursing.

Free retirement planning seminars will be held on campus this month for National Save for Retirement Week.

Representatives from TIAA-CREF and Fidelity — the university’s investment companies for the 403(b) Supplemental Retirement Plan — and the State Universities Retirement System will host free retirement planning and investing seminars Oct. 21-27.

Museum symposium
A symposium this month focuses on “The Museum as Site of Inquiry.”

The “In Sight/On View” symposium, Oct. 25 and 26, is sponsored by the graduate program in museum and exhibitions studies.

Johanna Burton, director of the graduate program for curatorial studies at Bard College, gives the keynote address at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at Gallery 400, Art and Design Hall.

The graduate symposium takes place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Jane Addams Hull-House Museum.

 

Contest for young musicians
Exceptional young musicians will be selected to perform with the UIC Orchestra or Concert Band in the Youth Concerto Competition.

The contest, sponsored by the department of theatre and music, is for students age 11 to 18. Winners receive $250.

Musicians who play orchestral instruments can apply; pianists or vocalists are not eligible.

Applications are due Nov. 15. The competition takes place Dec. 8.
