PT tour

The visit was arranged by PT alumna Julie Schwertfeger, an active advocate for increased National Institutes of Health funding for physical therapy research.

At the end of the tour, Roskam said he believes in supporting mission-critical work while continuing to look for ways to do things faster, better and less expensively under fiscal constraints.

 

UIC Open House

UIC will welcome prospective students, families, friends, alumni and community members at UIC Open House, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5.

Visitors will drop in at various venues to learn about undergraduate majors and programs, explore student life and housing, find out about financial aid and tour the campus.

Deadline for UIC units to register to participate is Sept. 12.

The Snowden affair

A discussion of “The Edward Snowden Affair: Journalistic Ethics and International Politics” will be presented at 5 p.m. Sept. 5 in Library Conference Room 1-470.

Speakers are Don Wycliff, distinguished journalist in residence at Loyola University Chicago, and Adrienne Massanari, assistant professor of communications.

In May, a British newspaper published a series of articles about wide-ranging government espionage activity based on revelations from Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor. The articles offered evidence that the NSA, CIA and other U.S. counter-terrorism organizations conducted surveillance campaigns on foreign governments and private citizens.

The program will be presented by the UIC Global Learning Community.

 

Honors for alumni

Deadline is Aug. 31 to nominate outstanding UIC alumni and friends for awards honoring achievement, humanitarianism, leadership, loyalty and spirit.

The awards are sponsored by the University of Illinois Alumni Association. A complete list, and nomination forms, are available online.

Undergrad Research Award

Applications from faculty and students are being accepted for the 2013-2014 Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Awards, which will fund more than 100 undergraduate students to work as research assistants in faculty labs.

Students must be eligible for Federal Work Study to participate.

Faculty members who hire a student also registered for research credit will receive a Faculty Research Mentor Award of $300 per student per semester to support any scholarly expenses.

 

Faculty research awards

Research awards of $20,000 are available through the 2013 Campus Research Board pilot grant program.

The support helps investigators develop preliminary data or other materials necessary for research projects in the basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering and the social sciences.

Last year’s competition was targeted to nontenure track and tenure-track junior faculty; the 2013 competition is for tenure track and tenured faculty only.

Deadline for letters of intent is Sept. 21. Deadline for full application is Oct. 15.

 

Job Analysis Update

An update of the process of converting academic professional jobs to civil service positions will be sponsored by the Academic Professional Advisory Committee Sept. 26.

The presentation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Molecular Biology Research Building’s Herman Auditorium.

Speakers will include Maureen Park, executive director and associate vice president of human resources, Robert Crouch, associate vice president for human resources, and Ron Puskarits, director of compensation in human resources.

Presenters will address questions submitted via the registration form and a Q&A session following.

Seating is limited; registration opens Sept. 2.

 

How composting works

Demonstrations of how food waste is composted will be done at all-you-care-to-eat dining locations.

The Office of Sustainability and Chicago Composting Coalition will provide education on the importance of taking only what you intend to eat, thus limiting food waste.

Demonstrations will be at James Stukel Towers Sept. 4, Student Center West Sept. 5, and Student Center East Sept. 6, all from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
