UIC welcomes more than 1,600 new students and their families Aug. 26 at the seventh annual convocation in the UIC Pavilion.
Faculty and staff are also invited to the event, which begins at 3 p.m., and the Chancellor’s New Student Welcome Picnic that follows.

Spark in the Park
The online votes are in, and DJ Ka$h was chosen as the UIC student act opening this year’s Spark in the Park outdoor concert Sept. 5.
The annual music festival takes place from 3 to 10 p.m. in Harrison Field.
The free concert — open only to UIC students — will feature a variety of musical acts. The headliner will be announced by mid-August; last year’s show featured Lupe Fiasco, The Cool Kids, Flosstradamus and The Hood Internet.
Support for student research
Applications are being accepted for the Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Award, which funds up to 100 undergraduate students to work as research assistants on campus, with salaries paid by federal work study and the Office of the Chancellor.
Faculty members who employ a student registered for course credit receive a $300 Faculty Research Mentor Award per student per semester for scholarly expenses.

Take time to give blood
Save a life, get ice cream or a beach towel at UIC Blood Donor Center collection drives this month.
August is Pint for a Pint Month — donate a pint of blood and get a certificate for a free pint of ice cream from Baskin Robbins, or a UIC Flames beach towel.
Donate weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the UI Hospital Blood Donor Center on the hospital’s first floor, with validated parking available; Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mile Square Health Center, 2045 W. Washington Blvd.; or Aug. 21-23, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Outpatient Care Center. All donors must have photo ID. The donor center recommends drinking plenty of fluids the day before donating, and eating a substantial meal no more than four hours before.

CAPE Award program expanded
The Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence (CAPE) Award program, which honors academic professional staff for excellence in service to UIC, has been expanded from four awards to six this year.
Since the deadline for nominations has passed, two additional awards will be given to nominees from this year’s entries.
The CAPE Award, established in 1988, includes a $1,000 permanent salary increase and a $2,000 one-time cash award.
The awards will be presented at the UIC Employee Recognition Award Program ceremony and reception Nov.14 in the UIC Forum.

Interested in journalism?
UIC News seeks two interns to add a student voice to its work in news and social media. It’s a great opportunity to gain experience writing for print and online, including news and feature writing, blogging, video, Twitter and Facebook.
Applicants should have experience in writing for publications (online or print) and an interest in journalism. Video and photography skills are a plus. Interns must enroll in an internship course for elective credit.

SPH certificate program
The School of Public Health will offer online programs in public health emergency preparedness and response starting in January.
The four-course, 14-credit certificate program will be offered through the division of community health sciences. Applications will be accepted in the fall.
Participants will receive an online master’s of public health degree with a specialization in public health preparedness and response.

Calling junior faculty
UIC’s Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health Program is now accepting applications for junior faculty scholars.
The program is a National Institutes of Health-funded institutional training grant and mentoring program for junior faculty members who conduct women’s health or sex/gender-based research.

Departments can sign up to host a booth at this year’s Fun Fairs.
The fun fairs, annual academic year kick-off parties hosted by Campus Programs, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 29 outside Student Center West and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Lecture Center Plaza.
Applications, available online, are due Friday.
