P.S. Siraj, director of the Metropolitan Transportation Support Initiative, was named director of research in the Urban Transportation Center, College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs.
Elizabeth A. Kócs, director of programming and outreach for the UIC Energy Initiative, was appointed editor-in-chief of the Materials Research Society’s digital journal, MRS Energy & Sustainability, A Review Journal. Kócs, adjunct assistant professor in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs, served on an advisory board and a planning group for the society.
Awards
Ross Arena, professor and head of physical therapy in the College of Applied Health Sciences, was named “Personality of the Year” by the department of physical therapy at the São Paulo State Society of Cardiology, Brazil.
Ranga Chandrasekaran, professor and director of graduate studies in information and decision sciences, College of Business Administration, was included among “20 Professors Changing Health Information Technology” by MedicalTechnologySchools.com
Naoko Muramatsu, associate professor of community health sciences in the School of Public Health, was named a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America.
Jennifer Reeder, associate professor of moving image in the School of Art and Art History, received the top award for narrative films at Curtocircuito, a 12-year-old international film festival in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Reeder’s “Blood Below the Skin” earned the Radar Award trophy and a prize of 3,000 euros. In September, the film won the top award at Encounters, a festival of short films and animation in Bristol, U.K.
Cortino Sukotjo, associate professor of restorative dentistry, received the American College of Prosthodontists Clinician/Researcher Award. He will be honored at the organization’s annual meeting Oct. 21–24 in Orlando, Florida.
H. Frank Cervone, director of informational technology in the School of Public Health, was appointed to the National Information Standards Organization Altmetrics Working Group B.
Timothy Johnson, director of the Survey Research Laboratory in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs, was named a fellow of the American Statistical Association for his work with multicultural and hard-to-reach populations.
Four College of Medicine students were among 30 medical students participating in the 2015 American Society of Nephrology Tutored Research and Education for Kidney Scholars (TREK) program. Nisa Desai, Deonna Glispie, Bhavik Patel and Philip Speigel attended the “Origins of Renal Physiology” course June 8–14 at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine.
