Even when it snows, UIC doesn’t close
As a matter of policy, UIC is never closed.
In extreme weather, the campus will continue to operate during regularly scheduled hours. Staff members are expected to report to work; those who can’t get to campus may request vacation time or make other arrangements with their supervisor or unit head.
Faculty members who cancel classes must be sure college and departmental offices are aware of the cancellations. All students must be informed as soon as possible by email or Blackboard, with the work made up later in the semester.
All classes will be canceled if the chancellor or provost determines that the health and safety of students, faculty and staff would be seriously jeopardized. In this case, the vice chancellors will notify the units that report to them.
Public announcements will be made through the news media, online and through the UIC Hotline, 312-413-9696.
The hospital and patient care support facilities are open regardless of weather. Staff and students in those areas are expected to report to work, even when classes are canceled.

Terminal benefit payout
UIC employees may defer vacation and compensable sick leave payouts to their 403(b) and/or 457 retirement accounts upon separation from the university or retirement.
For information on submitting a deferral form, call the UPB Benefits Services office (312-996-6471) at least 60 days before the last day of employment.

Reduced service
UIC will observe a reduced service schedule from Dec. 27 through Dec. 31.
On reduced service days, UIC will not be officially closed, and essential services, including security, will be provided. General administrative offices will close and doors to academic buildings will be locked.
University employees are asked to use accrued vacation time or floating holidays to cover these three days.
Staff members who would like to work during the reduced service days should notify their supervisor in writing by Dec. 1.
Campus units that do not observe the reduced service schedule include the UI Hospital, hospital clinics, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services, Facilities Management and Capital Programs, Environmental Health and Safety Office, Telecommunication Services, Facility and Space Planning, University Police, Campus Auxiliary Services and Biologic Resources Laboratory.

Professional development
Applications for the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women’s Professional Development Program are due Dec. 3.
The program provides funding support for professional development activities of women in the UIC community. Applicants can request up to $500 for professional development activities, such as conference or workshop costs; membership fees with professional organizations; or books and journals.
Interested in journalism?
UIC News seeks two interns to add a student voice to its work in news and social media. It’s a great opportunity to gain experience writing for print and online, including news and feature writing, blogging, video and social media.
Applicants should have experience in writing for publications (online or print) and an interest in journalism. Video and photography skills are a plus. Interns must enroll in an internship course for elective credit.

Bridging the gap
A Nov. 17 conference hosted by the department of surgery will bring together physicians, nurses, community health providers and outreach programs to focus on health care issues in minority communities.
“Bridging the Gap: Emerging Health Issues in Underrepresented Minorities,” will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UIC Forum.
Lunch and registration are free.

The Office of Publications Services printed a limited number of copies to preserve natural and university resources.
Friday Forum
The Great Cities Institute will host its last Friday Forum of the semester Friday.
Teresa Cordova, director of the institute, presents “A Scholarship of Engagement: Values, Theory and Practice” from noon to 1 p.m. in 110 College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs Hall.

New location for payroll, benefit offices
The Payroll Customer Service office and the Benefits Office have new temporary locations on the fourth floor of the Marshfield Building due to remodeling.
The payroll office will move upstairs from 106 Marshfield Building. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., phone 312-996-7200.

The remodeling should be completed by summer 2013.
Concert benefits students
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Four Tops will headline the 12th annual S.E.E. Benefit Nov. 30.
The event, hosted by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, funds scholarships for UIC students who demonstrate strong leadership skills.

Safe Zone training
The Gender and Sexuality Center presents Safe Zone training workshops to heighten awareness of LGBTQ issues.
Programs include information on sexual and gender identity issues, policies that affect LGBTQ individuals and strategies for creating inclusive environments.

Contest for young musicians
Exceptional young musicians will be selected to perform with the UIC Orchestra or Concert Band in the Youth Concerto Competition.
The contest, sponsored by the department of theatre and music, is for students age 11 to 18. Winners receive $250.
Musicians who play orchestral instruments can apply; pianists or vocalists are not eligible.
Applications are due Nov. 15. The competition takes place Dec. 8.
