Women’s gymnastics takes second at Classic

The Flames finished ahead of Northern Illinois (193.625) and Illinois State (193.200), while No. 14 Illinois took the title with 195.825.

Redshirt-junior Kimberly Randall led UIC on vault, tying her career best with 9.875 for fourth place.

Sophomore Giulia Hindermann came in just behind with a personal best of 9.825 to tie for fifth.

Senior Catherine Dion, junior Gabrielle May and sophomore Alexandra Vedenin tied for seventh with 9.800 and freshman Nikki Woodruff scored a career-high 9.725 to contribute to the Flames’ season-high score of 49.100.

On bars, Dion took the crown among 24 competing gymnasts, producing a career-high 9.900. Hindermann finished with a career best to tie for seventh with 9.825.

Dion recorded the best score for the Flames on beam with 9.700. Junior Gabrielle May came in with 9.675, as junior Tamara Moten and freshman Michelle Lozneanu competed in the event for the first time this season.

Vedenin came away with UIC’s best score on floor with a personal best of 9.750, followed by Dion and May with 9.750.

Dion came in third place in the all-around with 39.125, with Hindermann coming in with 38.875 and May with 38.475.

For her performance, Dion was selected the Illinois National Guard UIC Flames Student-Athlete of the Week for Feb. 17 to 23. She took top scores and finished for the Flames in all events in their weekend competition. The honor is Dion’s second of the season.

The Flames host Ball State at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Physical Education Building.
