Women’s basketball seals victory at home

Redshirt sophomore Ruvanna Campbell collected her fourth straight double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
The Flames host Green Bay at 3 p.m. Saturday at the UIC Pavilion. UIC’s 17-5 overall record is the program’s best mark through 22 games in the Division I era, which began in 1980.
UIC dominated inside as 50 of its 70 points came from in the paint. The Flames collected 19 offensive rebounds and 17 second-chance points. UIC won the rebounding battle (48-44) and is 17-2 when out-rebounding its opponent.
UIC picked up 12 steals and has averaged 11.1 steals over the last eight contests. The Flames held Oakland to 31.8 percent (21-of-66) shooting from the field.
Oakland took its largest lead of the contest at 13-8 with 13:40 left in the first half. The Golden Grizzlies led, 27-24, with 5:57 remaining but UIC responded with an 11-1 run to close out the half. The Flames led, 35-28, going into the locker room.
Kim Bee’s layup with 16:45 left on the clock kept the Oakland deficit at seven but UIC went on a 19-4 run over the next 6:33 to take its largest lead of the game (60-38). Oakland pulled within seven points three times with less than a minute to play but didn’t take the lead.
Campbell’s double-double was her league-high 14th of the season. It is her fourth consecutive 20-point effort; she is averaging 23.0 points and 14.5 rebounds.
Campbell was 10-of-20 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.
Senior Rachel Story picked up her 19th double-figure performance with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting. She had nine points and hit 5-of-7 free throws in the second half. She dished out four assists and collected two steals in 40 minutes of action.
Redshirt senior Katie Hannemann scored 16 points for her 17th double-digit effort. She passed Jo Ellen Swanson (1982-87) for 18th place in program history with 870 career points. Hannemann also grabbed seven rebounds in 27 minutes on the floor.
Sophomore Terri Bender collected three more steals for 26 steals over the last eight contests (3.3 per game). Senior Emily Kobel drained her 125th career three-pointer and needs four more to move past Sara Petersen (1994-98) into sixth place in program history.
