UIC Experts

School Closings’ Impact: One year after Chicago closed 50 schools, parents still prefer their children’s old schools, which the city treated as “portfolio” liabilities rather than stabilizing institutions, says education professor Pauline Lipman, who interviewed parents for a new report. Deadly Dip: Years of using smokeless tobacco while playing professional baseball took the life of Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn, who died last week of cancer of the salivary glands. Dr. Joel Schwartz, professor of oral medicine and pathology, can comment. Contact Sam Hostettler, (312) 355-2522; samhos@uic.edu
