UIC Experts
Gay Marriage: The launch of Illinois’ gay marriage law is a major victory for the people struggling for LGBT equality and rights, but it should not be considered an end point, says Jennifer Brier, UIC associate professor of gender and women’s studies and history. Brier says the varied social movements working on behalf of LGBT people have long understood that marriage is one possible right to be won, but attention must turn to issues including immigration reform, economic inequity and the implementation of health care reform. Illinois Historical Note: The first homosexual rights organization, Society for Human Rights, was founded in Illinois in 1924 by a multiracial group of men. Jennifer Brier, UIC associate professor of gender and women’s studies and history, can discuss the short-lived group’s importance in the gay rights movement locally, in addition to other historical topics that intersect gender, race and sexuality. Seasonal Allergies: Eating foods that contain proteins similar to those found in tree and grass pollen can exacerbate allergy symptoms, says Dr. Stephanie Joe, associate professor of otolaryngology in the UIC College of Medicine. “We often see people whose allergies are being treated with a good response, but then they eat a food that cross-reacts with their particular allergy and their symptoms worsen. Knowing what foods to avoid if you have allergies can go a long way towards reducing flare-ups, ” Joe says. Contact Sharon Parmet, (312) 413-2695; sparmet@uic.edu
