UIC Experts
New Immigration Bill? A proposed bill by a group of bipartisan senators could establish a path to citizenship for more than11 million undocumented immigrants. Maria de los Angeles Torres, UIC professor and director of Latin American and Latino studies, says it’s a step in the right direction, but it will be important to see President Obama’s proposal and how it will be negotiated. HOA Ruling: The Illinois Supreme Court’s recent ruling that homeowner associations have the power to stop vehicles and issue citations for violation of HOA traffic rules is an “uninformed decision,” according to Evan McKenzie, UIC associate professor of political science. McKenzie, an attorney, author, and expert on HOAs, says the ruling ignores practical problems. Contact Brian Flood, (312) 996-7681; bflood@uic.edu
Land Bank: Cook County’s new land bank is meant to spur redevelopment of delinquent property. Michael Pagano, dean of UIC’s urban planning college and author of “Terra Incognita: Vacant Land and Urban Strategies,” can comment. Contact Anne Brooks Ranallo, (312) 355-2523; aranallo@uic.edu
Tots’ Teeth: February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and the American Dental Association suggests parents schedule regular dental visits for their children at an early age so they develop good oral health habits throughout their life. Dr. Indru Punwani, UIC professor and interim head of pediatric dentistry, can comment. Contact Sam Hostettler, (312) 355-2522; samhos@uic.edu
