UIC Experts
Historic Speech: President Obama’s call for gay equality in his inaugural address was symbolically important, says John D’Emilio, UIC professor of gender and women’s studies and history. D’Emilio, a noted historian of gay and lesbian studies, says Obama’s association of Stonewall, the event that marked the birth of gay liberation, with the freedom struggles of African-Americans and women, represents an important historic moment in its own right.
