UIC welcomes class of 2020

UIC Class of 2019 at convocation

Parents and faculty greet new students at the UIC Convocation

Crowds of first-year and transfer students, many decked out in red T-shirts, will flock to the corner of Racine and Harrison Sunday to get a taste of what it’s like to be a UIC Flame.

New students entering the University of Illinois at Chicago this fall will parade into the UIC Pavilion to cheers from parents, faculty and staff at the annual UIC Convocation. The event marks the official beginning of the students’ entry into the academic community and gives them a crash course in UIC traditions.

WHEN:
Sunday, Aug. 21, 3 p.m.

WHERE:
UIC Pavilion, 525 S. Racine Ave.

DETAILS:
The 11th annual UIC Convocation welcomes new students and their families with guest speakers, presentations, and music by the UIC Pep Band. The atmosphere captures the campus spirit and traditions of UIC, including the singing of the Alma Mater and the Lighting of the Flame, this year by Flordalia Rodriguez-Garcia, Undergraduate Student Government president.

Convocation is followed immediately by the Chancellor’s New Student Welcome Picnic — featuring food, games, prizes and entertainment — behind the Student Residence and Commons at 700 S. Halsted St.

After saying their final goodbyes to family, students will return to their residences, unpack their bags, and take a deep breath. Classes begin Monday morning.
