Three teams compete in Horizon League tournaments
The men’s and women’s tennis teams and women’s golf team will play in Horizon League championship tournaments beginning today.
Women’s tennis
The women’s tennis team, No. 4 seed, faces No. 5 Milwaukee at 2 p.m. Friday at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The winner will advance to the semifinals against face No. 1 seed Youngstown State Saturday at 2 p.m.
Women’s tennis brought the regular season to a close last weekend with a 9-10 record and a 5-3 mark in the Horizon League after dropping matches to the top three seeds in No. 1 Youngstown State, No. 2 Detroit and No. 3 Cleveland State.
Last season, the Flames fell to Detroit, 4-1, in the first round of the tournament. The loss ended the Flames’ streak of 17-consecutive conference titles, dating back to their first in 1997, and 15 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Men’s tennis
The No. 5 men’s tennis team takes on No. 4 Youngstown State at 10 a.m. in the first round at Purdue Friday. The winner will advance to the semifinal round Saturday against No. 1 Green Bay. The Horizon League championship match is scheduled for Sunday.
UIC earned the No. 5 seed after going 2-4 against conference opponents. The Flames defeated Wright State March 29 (4-3) and Detroit April 11 (5-2).
At the 2014 Horizon League Championship, the Flames lost to Valparaiso in the first round, 4-3.
Women’s golf
The women’s golf team competes at the Horizon League Championship this weekend at Mission Inn Golf Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. The women’s tournament will be played on the Las Colinas Golf Course. The three-day competitive event between seven teams will get underway at 6:30 a.m. Friday.
The team champion and top-placing individual advance to the NCAA Tournament. The top placing individual also advances to the NCAA Tournament.
UIC finished sixth overall at the 2014 Horizon League Championship, shooting a three-round total of 985 (326-330-329) on the Las Colinas Golf Course.
