Thinking about a career in student affairs?

“If you truly want to make a difference in the lives of students inside and outside the classroom, then student affairs is the profession for you,” says Barbara Henley, vice chancellor for student affairs.

Two events next week will encourage students to think about a future in this field, sponsored by the National Association of Student Affairs Administrators for Careers in Student Affairs Month.

A panel discussion on “Career Pathways in Student Affairs” will be held Oct. 29, 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Illinois Room C, Student Center East.

A webinar on “Getting Involved in Professional Organizations” is set for Oct. 31, 3 to 5 p.m.

Jobs in student affairs in higher education range from psychologist to accountant, fundraiser, concert promoter, personal and athletic trainer, facilities manager and attorney, Henley says.

Most professionals in student affairs learn about the field when they are in college, working as student orientation leaders, housing resident assistants, student organization leaders or student workers, says Linda Deanna, associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students.

“A college campus is an exciting work environment filled with energy, enthusiasm and opportunities for life-long learning,” Deanna says.
