Summit, scavenger hunt, pantry on USG agenda

November proved to be one of the busiest months for the Undergraduate Student Government.

We kicked the month off with Student Advocacy Week, hosting a town hall, summit, scavenger hunt and more. At the town hall, students provided input on how the UIC Library and ACCC WiFi can better serve our students.

At the president’s summit, students from campus offices and organizations stopped by to talk about their current initiatives. Barbara Henley, vice chancellor for student affairs, told attendees about the importance of being involved on campus. Linda Deanna, associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students, spoke about the national “It’s On Us” campaign launched by the White House to reduce the number of sexual assaults nationwide.

We partnered with the Office of Campus Learning Environments to host a “Design Your Own Classroom” workshop. David Taeyaerts, director of the Office of Campus Learning Environments, sought student input on new design proposals for future lecture hall renovations.

The week before Thanksgiving, USG vice president Brandon Gaskew launched the grand opening of his Pop-Up Pantry. More than 100 students stopped by the pantry and were provided with free food and information on food sustainability resources around the city.

For next semester, I’ve created three committees to address student concerns: the Academic and Advising Policy Committee, Commuter Student Experience Committee and Campus Housing Student Experience Committee. Be on the lookout for surveys and open forums, where we will ask for your opinion on these subjects.
