Storytellers talk traditions

Arif Choudhury, Syd Lieberman and Susan O’Halloran

Arif Choudhury, Syd Lieberman and Susan O’Halloran present “More Alike Than Not: Stories from Three Americans — Catholic, Jewish and Muslim.”

Three professional storytellers will share stories about their traditions as Catholic, Jewish and Muslim Americans Thursday for the Chancellor’s Lecture and Event Series.

Susan O’Halloran, Arif Choudhury and Syd Lieberman will speak at “More Alike Than Not: Stories from Three Americans — Catholic, Jewish and Muslim,” 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the UIC Forum.

A light reception with kosher food options follows. RSVP to chancellor@uic.edu.

“We don’t have enough opportunity to hear each other’s narratives and accept another person’s subjective truth as a lens to look through,” said Marla Baker, executive director at the Levine Hillel Center at UIC.

“It’s important to hear another person’s perspective or truth rather than seeing things with the biases that we come with.”

The event is sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor, Levine Hillel Center, Catholic studies, Jewish studies, Jewish Muslim Initiative, John Paul II Catholic Newman Center and Caterpillar.

The program will be followed by a 3 p.m. “Ask Big Questions” storytelling workshop at the Honors College, co-sponsored by the UIC Jewish Muslim Initiative and the Hillel Ask Big Questions Initiative.
