Staying organized

checklist

One thing that has really helped me during the semester is staying organized. We have multiple classes, which means multiple assignments and due dates. Some things are due the same week – and even the same day – so you have to be organized. There are some simple things that you can do to become more organized.

  • Clean out your email inbox every once in a while. This is important because a lot of the messages you get are junk mail. Don’t let these things build up because you may need to go back to another message and you don’t want to have to look through thousands of messages to find what you are looking for.
  • Write down what you have to do for the week. This is crucial to staying on top of course work. I know you may be thinking that you can remember everything in your head, but don’t put that much pressure on your brain. Just jot down your assignments and I suggest you put them in the order according to what is due first. Then when you complete one, check it off your list. In college, the best feeling in the world is checking off a completed assignment.
  • Don’t procrastinate. This is something that will have a greater impact on your energy level. I say that because if you procrastinate, you will lose sleep because at some point that work will have to get done and your only option will be to pull all-nighters.

Matthew Maggit is a sophomore in accounting in the College of Business Administration. Matthew decided to come to UIC because of the business program’s reputation and because he wanted to study at a campus with a diverse atmosphere. He likes how close the campus is to downtown Chicago and the Willis Tower. In his free time, he loves to surround myself with loved ones, and he enjoys sports and going to the gym.
