UIC presents free, low-cost spring concerts
Jazz, classical and choral ensembles from the University of Illinois at Chicago will play concerts throughout Chicago this spring, led by professional conductors on the UIC music faculty.

UIC Concert Band & String Orchestra
April 22, 7:30 p.m.
Logan Center for the Arts, University of Chicago, 915 E. 60th St.
Directed by Daniel Black and Nicholas Carlson, the string orchestra and concert band will feature cellist Sonam Dodhia and flutist Kedgrick Pullums, co-winners of UIC’s first All-University Concerto Competition.
The UIC String Orchestra will perform “Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis,” by Ralph Vaughan Williams; Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, op. 107, by Dmitri Shostakovich; and “Russian Easter Overture” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
The UIC Concert Band will perform “Gavorkna Fanfare” by Jack Stamp, Concertino Op. 107 by Cecile Chaminade, “Anunkasan, the Sky Spirit” by Christopher Tucker, “Testament” by David Maslanka, and “Chant” by Gary Ziek.
Admission is free.
UIC Jazz Ensemble & Combo
April 24, 7 p.m.
Recital Hall L285, 1040 W. Harrison St.
Directed by Andy Baker, the Jazz Ensemble performs new compositions and classics. When the ensemble released its first recording, “Intuition,” in 2012, Chicago Jazz Magazine praised its “great sense of swing and ensemble blend.”
The ensemble and combos have performed recently at the Jazz Showcase and the Hyde Park Jazz Society. Each spring, the ensemble performs with an internationally recognized jazz artist (Miguel Zenón in 2013) as the highlight of the UIC Jazz Festival.

UIC Choirs: Choral Masterworks
May 2, 7:30 p.m.
St. Francis of Assisi Church, 813 W. Roosevelt Road
Michael J. Anderson and Andrew Lewis will direct the UIC Symphonic Choir and the Janus Ensemble in “Requiem in C Minor” by Cherubini, “La mort d’Ophelie” by Hector Berlioz, and “Brick” by Marc Mellits of UIC’s faculty, with Martin Davids as concertmaster.
The Janus Ensemble, a professional chamber orchestra founded in 1998, performs Early and Baroque music according to historically informed practice, as well as new music.
Tickets are $10 for general admission or $5 for students, seniors and UIC staff. Tickets may be purchased online or at the door (cash only).
