South Asian American history, culture featured in exhibit

The University of Illinois at Chicago presents “South Asian American History, Culture and Community,” an exhibit celebrating South Asian American culture.

DETAILS:

The exhibit features historical text and images exploring the heritage and contributions of South Asian American immigrant communities and family pictures submitted by members of the South Asian American community at UIC and in Chicago.

Informative displays are from the South Asian American Policy and Research Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization established in 2001 to serve South Asian Americans in the Chicago area by using research to formulate equitable and socially responsible policy recommendations.

Admission is free and open to the public Monday through Thursday, noon – 9 p.m.; and Friday, noon – 5 p.m. For more information, call the UIC Asian American Resource and Cultural Center at (312) 413-9569.

The exhibit is presented in association with DesiLit’s Kriti Festival, a South Asian arts and literature event that will take place Sept. 25 – 28 at UIC. The Sept. 25 gallery reception is the festival’s kick-off event.

Campus co-sponsors for the exhibit are the Asian American Resource and Cultural Center, Asian American studies, Asian studies, and Campus Programs in collaboration with the South Asian American Policy and Research Institute.
