Six UIC students awarded Gilman study abroad scholarships

Six University of Illinois at Chicago undergraduates have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman scholarships to study abroad this spring.
The Gilman Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. State Department to diversify the group of students who study abroad and their destinations.
The UIC students are among more than 700 undergraduates awarded Gilman scholarships. To be eligible for the award, students must demonstrate financial need by receiving a federal Pell Grant for their studies.
Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study-abroad program costs. Since 2006, UIC students have received over 90 Gilman scholarships totaling more than $375,000.
The latest UIC recipients, who represent the colleges of business administration and liberal arts and sciences, and their destinations include (EDITORS: See list).
The program is funded through the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 and is administered by the Institute of International Education’s Southern Regional Center in Houston. The program honors former U.S. Rep. Benjamin A. Gilman of New York, a former chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee.

CHICAGO — Jennifer Molina, (Albany Park), a junior in finance, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Paulina Struk, an Honors College sophomore in biochemistry, Sydney, Australia; Raven Wells, (Chatham), a junior in English, Tokyo, Japan; Irving Zamudio, (Pilsen), a junior in history, Fez, Morocco
ITASCA — Shira Marcus, a senior in psychology, Suva, Fiji
PROSPECT HEIGHTS — Magdalena Sosinska, a junior in psychology, Uppsala, Sweden
