Computer scientist wins second Test of Time award

For the second consecutive year Bing Liu, professor of computer science in the College of Engineering, was awarded the Test of Time award from ACM SIGKDD, an organization for data mining, data science and analytics.

The award is given to papers from the Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining conference that are more than a decade old and have withstood the test of time, as evidenced by a large number of citations since their original release.

The paper, “Mining and Summarizing Customer Reviews,” was presented in 2004. First author was then-doctoral student Minqing Hu, who graduated in 2006 and is now senior software engineer at Teradata.

“In 2015 terms we would say it was the seminal paper in the area of automated text mining of customer reviews’ content from sites like Amazon, Yelp, and so on,” said Robert Sloan, professor and head of computer science.

Liu and co-authors Wynne Hsu and Yiming Ma received the 2014 Test of Time award for the paper “Integrating Classification and Association Rule Mining.”
