Dozens of UIC community members came to campus on June 11 for the 2024 Pride Picnic, hosted by the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of LGBTQ+ People and the UIC Gender and Sexuality Center.
The annual picnic, held this year at the gazebo outside the Behavioral Sciences Building, coincides with Pride Month, which marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City in 1969. On June 28 that year, patrons at the Stonewall Inn and other bars fought back during police raids of LGBTQ+ bars, sparking a national movement for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States.
At the picnic, UIC students, staff and faculty socialized and enjoyed the sunny weather, and also celebrated this year’s Lavender Grads, 2024 graduates who are members of the LGBTQ+ community.
