Appointments

Pamela Quiroz, professor of sociology and educational policy studies, was named co-editor of Social Problems, the journal of the Society for the Study of Social Problems.

Awards

Stewart Shankman, associate professor of psychology, received the early career award from the International Society for Research in Psychopathology. Shankman was recognized for his multi-method research examining the relation between depressive and anxiety disorders, the nature and familial transmission of emotional disorders, and basic questions in affective science. The award was presented at the group’s annual meeting held in Oakland, Calif., in September.

The Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement received an award for best practices from the Illinois chapter of the American Planning Association for Voorhees’ study of south suburban retail. The reward was presented at an Oct. 4 reception at the DePaul Center. The center is co-directed by Janet Smith, associate professor of urban planning and policy, and Yittayih Zelalem, research assistant professor of urban planning and policy.

Honors

Daniel Cervone, professor of psychology, was named founding program co-chair of the first International Convention of Psychological Science, organized by the Association for Psychological Science. The convention, scheduled for March 2015 in Amsterdam, is part of a broad effort to showcase new works in psychological science from around the world and promote collaboration across geographic and disciplinary borders.

Performances

Yasen Peyankov, head of the acting program in the School of Theatre & Music, appeared in the Steppenwolf Theatre production of “The Wheel” through Nov. 10.

 Presentations 

Tony Tasset, professor of art, discussed his work in “Public Artist, Secret Avant-Garde” Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at Unity Temple in Oak Park.

Steve Schlickman, executive director of the Urban Transportation Center, moderated a Sept. 13 panel discussion on sustainable transportation hosted by U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley and University President Bob Easter at CTA headquarters. Panelists included CTA President Forrest Claypool and representatives from other government agencies and the Active Transportation Alliance.

Publications

Ting-Wei Zhang, professor of urban planning and policy, attended, as a contributor, the book launch of Cities and Biodiversity Outlook, organized by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The Oct. 4 event was held at UN-HABITAT headquarters in New York for World Habitat Day. Zhang contributed to the China section of the book.

Jeff Gore, academic adviser in the Global Learning Community program, contributed an essay to Chicago Shakespeare Theater: Suiting the Action to the Word, a collection of articles exploring the study of William Shakespeare during the theater’s first 25 years.

Michael Brown, visiting professor of mechanical and industrial engineering, is the author of A History of a cGMP Medical Event Investigation, which describes how the development and launch of a new drug can go wrong, with disastrous consequences. In the book, he advocates engineering design principles to ensure safe and effective product design, development and manufacturing. Brown has more than 25 year’s experience in the biomedical industry in addition to his academic career.
