Overtime goal lifts Flames to 1-0 win
In the seventh minute of overtime with the score tied at 0-0, Jose Fuentes collected the ball from Manny Chavez and shot the game-winner to give the men’s soccer team a 1-0 (OT) shutout victory against Northern Kentucky Saturday at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
Fuentes’ goal was his first of the season and Chavez picked up his fifth assist.
The win marked the Flames’ fifth victory in their last seven games as they remain unbeaten in the Horizon League (6-3-2, 3-0-1 Horizon League).
“There is always a certain satisfaction with getting a full three points on the road, especially in conference play,” head coach Sean Phillips said. “It was one of those days where we had to defend well until we finished our chances. Good teams find a way to get these results.”
It was a game of possession from start to finish, with shots on either side held to a minimum. The Flames controlled a majority of the game and executed 11 shots and held the Norse to a mere four attempts. Jorge Alvarez led all players with five shots and had three on goal.
The Flames head to Michigan this week for a match at Detroit at 11 a.m. Saturday.
