Orthopaedic surgeon receives UIC College of Medicine alumni award
The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine honored Dr. Wayne Goldstein, CEO and founder of the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, with the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Award at its Oct. 4 alumni dinner. Goldstein graduated from the UIC College of Medicine in 1978.

“This award is a gift beyond what I ever expected, and I am humbled at this honor,” said Goldstein. “The UIC College of Medicine allowed a student from the Chicago Public School system to progress through undergraduate, medical school and residency to become professor of clinical orthopaedic surgery.” Goldstein dedicated his award to his orthopaedic residents and to his son, who completed his medical residency at the UIC College of Medicine.
Goldstein, who since 2000 has held a faculty position as clinical professor of orthopaedics in the UIC College of Medicine, said his work is a way of giving back to the community “in return for this gift I have been given.”
Goldstein has performed more than 15,000 joint replacement surgeries and pioneered a total hip replacement technique using a much smaller incision than traditional surgeries. He is a specialist in knee and hip reconstruction and has helped design numerous implants in wide use today.
In 1990, he founded the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, one of the largest orthopaedic group practices in Illinois with more than 90 physicians and 20 locations in the Chicagoland area.
Goldstein earned his undergraduate degree from the university’s Urbana-Champaign campus in 1974. He did his internship and residency at the UIC College of Medicine and a fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
The award was established by the UIC College of Medicine in 1994 to honor medical alumni for outstanding contributions and exceptional service to the medical profession, the community and the College of Medicine.
