New honors scholarship rewards civic leadership
UIC graduate Kevin Desouza and his wife, Sally Desouza, established their second endowment in support of Honors College students.
A new scholarship has been established at the University of Illinois at Chicago Honors College to recognize academic achievement and outstanding campus leadership.
The Desouza Family Endowment Fund for Civic Leadership, funded by UIC Honors College and College of Business Administration alumnus Kevin Desouza and his wife, Sally Desouza, will support students of any major who excel academically and who go beyond the classroom to make a positive impact through community service and leadership in student organizations.
It is the second endowed scholarship established by the couple. In 2011, they funded an annual scholarship to assist Honors College business students whose leadership in extracurricular activities adds to the quality of life on campus.
Kevin Desouza is associate dean for research in the College of Public Programs at Arizona State University and professor in the School of Public Affairs. He is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
While a UIC student, he received multiple awards for his contributions to the UIC community, including the Nancy Tuzzolino Award, the Chancellor’s Student Service Award and the Student Leadership Award. He was president of Beta Alpha Psi from 1998 to 2000.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and information and decision sciences from UIC in 2000 and a doctorate in management of information systems from UIC in 2006.
Sally Desouza holds an Ed.S. degree from Lewis and Clark College and works as a certified school psychologist for a Phoenix-area public school district.
