My online learning experience at UIC: Danielle Hull

Chicago’s vibrant energy has halted from my window, resembling the beginning of a zombie film.

But with all of the uncertainty looming outside, the transition to online courses and remote work thankfully has been smooth for me technology-wise. My professors have done a great job turning to online resources, some for the very first time.

I do miss walking through the quad in the morning, and it’s funny to think that I’m longing to get lost in the maze that is the Behavioral Sciences Building. But seeing the faces of my peers and professors is uplifting when class is held using Zoom or Blackboard Collaborate.

Many of us had never taken online courses, so the biggest thing that helped to finish the semester online was time management and staying optimistic.

Here are my top 5 tips for online learners:

  1. Write out your weekly assignments ahead of time — not just the due date but the days and times you plan to work on them.
  2. Email your professors if you do not understand the material; don’t be afraid or concerned that you are asking too many questions. Use YouTube or other video resources if you need a visual representation as well.
  3. Take advantage of the time you have now; get your assignments done early in the day to make time for hobbies to relax and better yourself. I enjoyed painting and watching films. It will help relieve stress and you will feel accomplished.
  4. Set and follow goals for yourself. Actually finish your assignments on the day you plan to. Use this time to teach yourself time management.
  5. Don’t be so hard on yourself — adjusting can be hard. It’s important to remember that it’s OK to make mistakes as long as you never stop trying to improve. Take a breather, get some fresh air and try again.
