John Lennon educational tour bus rolls into UIC

The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus in Las Vegas, Palo Alto High School

The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus at Palo Alto High School in Las Vegas. The bus comes to UIC Sept. 6-11.

The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, a non-profit audio, video and broadcast studio that has offered free, hands-on learning since 1998, will be at the University of Illinois at Chicago Sept. 6 – 11, in front of UIC’s Jane Addams Hull-House Museum at 800 S. Halsted St.

The Lennon Bus mentors young creators as it tours the U.S. and Canada for 10 months each year. Youths compose and create on the same equipment used by celebrated artists such as Yoko Ono, will.i.am, Tom Jones, Miguel, Natasha Bedingfield and actor Richard Dreyfuss as they learn from the engineers who live and work aboard the multimillion-dollar mobile studio.

The bus will be open to the public for free tours on Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  It will be available to youth organizations Sept. 6 – 10.

“The Lennon Bus supports young people to produce projects reflective of their ideas, concerns and aspirations in these times, which intersect with efforts to end youth violence and work for peace and justice in our city,” said Lisa Yun Lee, director of the UIC School of Art & Art History.

“I knew it had to visit Chicago, the center of the most exciting youth movements.”

Participants from youth organizations will spend a full day developing an original project — creating the music, video and images needed to take the idea from concept to delivery. On Sept. 6, bus staff will work with The Chicago Track, a school for film and music sponsored by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Free Spirit Media, and Young Chicago Authors. Organizations planning later projects include UIC’s Immigrant Youth Justice movement; Project Nia, which works to end youth incarceration; and Donda’s House, which offers arts instruction directed by Grammy-winning artist Che “Rhymefest” Smith.
