How was your summer?
My summer break was quite busy, mainly because I decided to take a summer class so I didn’t get much time to relax or sleep in. However, I did watch the Blackhawks clinch the Stanley Cup on home ice, which was really exciting. Three Stanley Cups in six years validates them as a dynasty in my eyes. If you didn’t know, Chicago now has six NBA championships and six Stanley Cups. That makes me feel great to be a Chicagoan. And the parade downtown was even better; I have never seen that many red shirts.
I also started a new job and began attending career development workshops for a new program in Chicago called America Needs You. This two-year program helps first-generation college students, like myself, find their specific career interests, internships and a mentor who will help prepare them for their career after college. At the last workshop, we discussed networking and professional etiquette. Something that I learned my first year was that I need to learn how to communicate with business professionals in a professional way, whether it’s over the phone, email or in person. This program is helping me strengthen that area. This program will be recruiting a new class of fellows in the future. To all of the incoming freshmen and transferring students: welcome to the family! Something you need to know about UIC is that we are an up and coming university and you will contribute to the continued success of our school. My advice to you is to come to school every day and study hard. If you don’t understand something, locate the resources provided to you that can help. Become familiar with SSB, also known as the Student Services Building, located on Harrison and Racine. They have offices like the African American Academic Network (AAAN) and TRIO, which have tutors available. Just stop in and make an appointment. I wish you the best this semester!
Matthew Maggit is a sophomore in accounting in the College of Business Administration. Matthew decided to come to UIC because of the business program’s reputation and because he wanted to study at a campus with a diverse atmosphere. He likes how close the campus is to downtown Chicago and the Willis Tower. In his free time, he loves to surround myself with loved ones, and he enjoys sports and going to the gym.
