Have your voice heard
The UIC English department is accepting submissions for the #YourVoiceMatters campaign, which will feature various forms of creative writing from students. This project aims to showcase the different socioeconomic, ethnic and racial backgrounds of UIC students and how it has inspired them to write on their perspectives.
The campaign will be turned into a magazine at the end of the semester and physical copies will be handed out on campus.
Individual writing samples will be blasted on the official UIC English Twitter page, as well as featured on their student curated website. Students from all majors are encouraged to submit their writing — poetry, nonfiction, essays, reviews, prose, interviews and more — to bwilli49@uic.edu with the subject line “My Voice Matters.”
It cannot go unnoticed that the UIC Latino Cultural Center has been working hard to create a safe space for students in this political climate. The center is initiating an ‘ARTivism’ project to promote works of art created by students that evoke political change and social justice. The submission deadline is 5 p.m. Feb. 27. Bernie Williams is a senior majoring in English with a concentration in media, cultural and rhetoric studies. She hopes to practice and master an assortment of mediums, including screenwriting, writing for the New York Times, lifestyle blogging, fiction and radio broadcasting. Bernie has a passion for creating and sharing stories. The heightened diversity of the city atmosphere surrounding UIC is perfect for her. Bernie’s side hobbies are indulging in TV shows (specifically Scandal, Girls and Law and Order: SVU), interior design and Instagram.
