German auto executive awarded UI alumni award

University of Illinois at Chicago alumnus Axel F. Strotbek was recently honored for having made significant contributions to the institution, Chicago, and the world beyond.
Strotbek, chief financial officer for the Volkswagen subsidiary Audi AG, in Ingolstadt, Germany, was recognized Oct. 11 on the UIC campus for his excellence, impact, accomplishment, service and vision by the University of Illinois Alumni Association.
The 1991 MBA graduate is a “multilingual leader with high business acumen and the ability to balance fiscal control with forward-looking investment,” the association said in a news release.
Strotbek is also a member of Audi’s Board of Management and has successfully steered the company through the recent world financial crisis and strengthened the firm by investing in its workforce, new products and future technologies. Previously, he was executive vice president for finances at the Volkswagen Group China in Beijing, where he restored an operating unit to profitability within a few short years.
Last year, he helped promote the Pole2Pole expedition from the North to South poles that, in part, used an Audi-designed carbon-neutral sled. Strotbek is also a frequent invited participant of the prestigious World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
