UIC awards take faculty, students around the world

B. Murphy

Brian Murphy collected bacteria from the coasts of Iceland through a Nuveen award.

Scuba diving in Iceland, art exhibitions in Germany — these are some of the projects faculty and students pursue with grants and scholarships from UIC’s Office of International Affairs.

Applications are due Oct. 14 for the John Nuveen International Development Fund, which will award 10 grants of $1,000 for faculty projects that foster international collaboration.

Last year Brian Murphy, assistant professor of medicinal chemistry and pharmocognosy, worked with researchers at the University of Iceland to collect bacteria in the ocean. The bacteria are being tested for their use in producing new drugs to combat infectious diseases.

Beatte Geisler, assistant professor of art, collaborated with the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany, where she is planning an annual exhibition that will feature work from UIC art students.

A. Djalilian-A. Mehralian--Ophthalmoscopic

Ali Djalilian, left, worked with colleague Amir Mehralian to develop a telemedicine device with funding from a Nuveen award.

Ali Djalilian, associate professor of ophthalmology, and Amir Mehralian, assistant director of ophthalmology education, built a compact, portable telemedicine device using a Panoptic ophthalmoscope and a cell phone. It allows ophthalmologists to assist remote clinics in underserved regions around the world.
