Five UIC students receive scholarships to study abroad

Five University of Illinois at Chicago undergraduates have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman scholarships to study abroad.

The UIC students are among more than 1,000 undergraduates awarded Gilman scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $8,000 to apply toward their study abroad program costs during the spring academic term. Since 2006, UIC students have received 73 Gilman scholarships totaling more than $300,000.

Eligible students are those who demonstrate financial need as recipients of the federal Pell grant for their studies and who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in education abroad.

The Gilman scholarship program, sponsored by the U.S. State Department, aims to diversify the group of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. The program is funded through the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 and is administered by the Institute of International Education’s Southern Regional Center in Houston. It honors former U.S. Rep. Benjamin A. Gilman of New York, who chaired the House Foreign Relations Committee.

UIC recipients, representing the colleges of Architecture and the Arts, Business Administration, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Urban Planning and Public Affairs, and their destinations, are:

–Jonathan Boyden, Chicago (Calumet Heights), senior in theater performance, Florence, Italy.

–Julian Collins, Joliet, Ill., senior in urban and public affairs, Valparaiso, Chile.

–Alexandra Molina, Chicago (Albany Park), sophomore in information and decision sciences, Paris.

–Annayeli Munoz, Elmhurst, Ill., junior in French and Francophone studies and psychology, Dakar, Senegal.

–Blessing Obioma, Chicago (Rogers Park), sophomore of undeclared major, Cardiff, Wales.

Molina and Obioma are participating in UIC exchange programs.
