Finding your muse

My muse is to graduate, get a job and to defy all the odds.

This is one of those blogs that may come off as completely random, but it may also help someone, bear with me. Muse is defined as a verb as “to consider something thoughtfully” and as a noun – “a source of artistic inspiration.” Often we repeatedly go through an action so much that we lose focus of the purpose, thus the action becomes mundane. The action can range from a spiritual lifestyle, a job, an education or even a relationship.

I am going to convey my message through the perspective of an educational muse. Each semester, we come in full of energy, but somewhere in between the professor giving us the 10-page syllabus and the final exam, our soul has slowly drifted away like Beowulf’s funeral procession – and it is completely understandable. As a student, we take many classes, some that are pertinent to our interest and some that we just have to take. The trick to making sure that you are not drifting away begins with finding your muse.

I am taking 18 credits this semester, which I do not recommend, and at points, I have lost motivation to even pick up a pen to take notes, but then I remember that my goal (my muse) is to graduate, get a job and to defy all the odds that have been labeled to me. Remembering my muse is what keeps the oil running through my engine, the drum stick striking my snare, it is the passion that keeps my heart thumping.

Without a muse, it is easy to give up. Essentially, your ritual becomes a routine and all meaning is lost. What is your muse? Define your muse, give it a name, bring it to life – do anything to keep your soul from drifting away.

He won’t tell you if he was successful on that mission, but let’s be real – have you ever seen him and Batman in the same place before?
