Filmmaker, activist headline memorial events

The University of Illinois at Chicago department of African American studies will present two events as part of the Grace Holt Memorial Celebration, an annual speaker series commemorating the professor who founded UIC’s black studies program (which later became the department of African American studies).

The Grace Holt Memorial Celebration will include the following presentations:

Legacy Luncheon with filmmaker Nicole Franklin, UIC alumna and news director of kweliTV, an online streaming service focused on the global black community. Franklin will show excerpts from the Chicago chapter of her 10-part documentary film series “Little Brother,” which examines the emotional lives of young black males. UIC African American Cultural Center, Addams Hall, 2nd floor, 830 S. Halsted St.

“The Life of the Mind and Today’s Activism for Black Liberation: How Academia and Movement Building Intersect.” Keynote lecture by Charlene Carruthers, national director of Black Youth Project 100. Reception will follow. Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Residents’ Dining Hall, 800 S. Halsted St.
