Dr. Jalees Rehman is a professor of medicine and pharmacology and head of biochemistry and molecular genetics at the UIC College of Medicine. His laboratory studies how organs and blood vessels are injured by bacterial or viral infections. His research is finding ways to dampen excessive inflammation and activate tissue regeneration so that organs recover.
Rehman’s research shows how blood vessels in organs differ from each other and why the lung blood vessels are especially vulnerable to severe injury, such as what is seen in patients with severe COVID-19. His research group is also using machine learning and deep learning tools to understand the genes that regulate inflammation, injury and repair.
