Zona Abierta: Resistance To Counter-insurgency In Southern Mexico

Militarization and mega development projects have historically affected marginalized communities, these are the realities that many indigenous communities are currently facing in Southern Mexico. Join us for a presentation and dialogue with Professor Maria Hernández who will share insight and analysis from the grassroots communities, their development of autonomy, and defense of the land against these Neoliberal schemes.

Mariana Hernandez brings more than 20 years of experience in community organizing and popular education. Professor Hernández received her Anthropology degree in the UAM (metropolitan autonomous university) in 2011 and has taught language & culture and intercultural bilingual education related subjects at two public universities in Mexico City (the National Pedagogy University and the UAM). She is currently the head professor for the AUSM’s chiapas program.
