In 1606, William Shakespeare wrote “Macbeth,” a searing examination of the dark heart of a would-be autocrat. In 1896, Alfred Jarry took “Macbeth” and turned it on its head to create “Ubu Roi,” a comedy so shocking that it caused rioting in the streets of Paris after its only public performance. In 2019, Henry Wishcamper took “Macbeth” and “Ubu Roi” and jammed them together to create “Pshitter! A Drinking Song for the Year of our Lord 2020,” a mashup that is as absurd, grotesque, tragic and cruel as the turbulent times we are living through. Now adapted to the topsy-turvy year of 2022, “Pshitter” explores the worldwide fascination with autocracy. And don’t forget — “fair is foul, and foul is fair!” witches!
