The Dr. Rebecca Crumpler Health Policy Virtual Summit

On behalf of the University of Illinois Chicago, UI Health, Vertex, GSK (Pharmaceutical Companies) and the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation, we are honored to invite the UIC community, students, faculty and staff to join us for our Women’s History Month – Dr. Rebecca Crumpler Health Policy Virtual Summit.

Our collective organizations collaborated with a goal to convene legislators, policymakers, health care professionals and the community-at-large to understand and focus on the importance of policymaking at the state level as it pertains to the significance of health care needs that impact communities of color and future generations.

At this summit, you will have the opportunity to collaborate, exchange ideas, listen to the subject matter experts, hear some firsthand patient stories and policy recommendations aligned with areas that disproportionality impact communities of color.

Topics of Discussion Include:

Sickle Cell, Update on COVID-19 Vaccinations, Maternal Mortality and Diversifying the Health care Workforce.

About Dr. Rebecca Crumpler:

Born in Delaware in 1831, Dr. Rebecca Crumpler was the first African American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. Known as a true pioneer, she rolled up her sleeves during this very challenging time period and fought deep-seated prejudice against women and African Americans in medicine. After earning her degree in Boston, she spent time in Richmond, Virginia, after the Civil War, caring for formerly enslaved people. In 1883, Dr. Crumpler published her “Book of Medical Discourses,” which highlighted and chronicled her experiences as a doctor and also provided guidance on maternal and child health.
