This talk will offer the most current information on artificial intelligence applications in public health and their role in protecting population health and well-being. Participants can expect to learn what an AI system is, how it can be designed and how it can be used to address public health problems. No prior knowledge of AI or coding experience is required.
Learning objectives:
- Explain what an AI system is and what components it has.
- Describe AI applications in public health and their benefits, challenges and opportunities.
- Define how AI/public health projects are completed. Apply tools to make decisions about when to use AI to solve public health problems, and recognize their roles in AI/public health projects.
- Identify ethical issues related to AI systems.
Speaker: Houshang Darabi, professor in the departments of Computer Sciences and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at UIC.
Darabi holds a doctorate in industrial and systems engineering. He served as co-director of the Great Lakes Center for Occupational Health and Safety’s occupational safety academic program and is currently director of the center’s targeted research training program that focuses on applications of AI in occupational health and safety. In 2022 in collaboration with the center’s continuing education program, Darabi developed the first course in the United States to train occupational health and safety industry professionals in AI. Darabi has established an innovative laboratory dedicated to the advancement, exploration and testing of AI-driven technologies to enhance occupational health and safety practices.
