Whereas many theistic philosophers have vigorously attempted to “justify the ways of God” in the face of suffering, in recent times others have argued that it is religiously and/or morally wrong to do so. Their approach has been called anti-theodicy. Professor Shatz will examine several considerations that have been marshaled for an antitheodic stance, particularly by Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, and compare them to the pro-theodic approach of Moses Nahmanides.
