“One Million Experiments” screening and conversation

Date / Time

February 18, 2025

3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Join the Department of Black Studies for the “One Million Experiments” event at UIC: a performance, screening and interactive conversation with filmmakers Damon Williams and Daniel Kisslinger about the new liberatory possibilities already in the making all around us.

Following the 3:30 p.m. screening, join us for a conversation between the filmmakers and Martine Caverl, co-founder and executive director of Ujimaa Medics. The conversation will be moderated by Beth Richie, professor of Black studies and criminology, law and justice at UIC.

Stop by before the screening for a tabling event in Student Center East Room 613 with on-campus groups and local organizations. Come connect and learn how you can get involved! The room opens at 3 p.m.

RSVP for the event.

Film description: “One Million Experiments” is a film exploring how we define and create wellness and reduce harm in a world without police and prisons. Built out of a podcast and curated collection of community-based safety projects created in the midst of the 2020 uprisings, “One Million Experiments” remixes longform interviews with movement workers across the world who have created community-based safety projects. “One Million Experiments,” or “1ME,” expands our ideas about what keeps us safe, celebrates the work already happening to build solutions grounded in transformation instead of punishment and invites you to participate in the joyous work of liberation. We don’t need one answer to how we get free — we need one million experiments.
