Internationally known longevity researcher S. Jay Olshansky will explain why we should focus on increasing “healthspan,” not lifespan, at an April 1 presentation sponsored by the UIC chapter of the State Universities Annuitants Association.
Human longevity has reached its upper limits, says Olshansky, UIC professor of public health. It’s time to work on extending the period that people remain healthy as they age.
“You don’t want to live to be over 100 years old if the last 20 years of your life are spent in pain and sickness,” Olshansky says. “We should not continue to pursue life extension without considering the health consequences of living longer lives.”
The presentation is free and open to the campus community.
